Obituary

Hewie H. Coburn, 95, of Coloma passed away on October 25, 2022 at Serenity Shore ALF in Stevensville.

A memorial service will be held at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma on Friday, November 11 at 11 a.m. with visitation 30 minutes prior to service. The service is open to all family and friends. Memorial donations in Hewie's memory may be made to El Bethel Church of God, Caring Circle Hospice or St. Jude Children's Hospital. Hewie was born on April 30, 1927 at a pecan nursery in Lumberton, Miss. to parents Luke E. and Mary Emma "Dollie" Coburn.  In 1935, his father moved his family to a homestead farm in Northeast Louisiana and grew cotton for several years.  Hewie had 18 siblings.  At 16-yrs old he went to work with his father as a tacker for 1-½ yrs at Ingalls shipyards in Pascagoula, Miss. He later served two separate terms as a fireman in the Army Air Force between 1945 and 1952.  After his military service, he moved to Indiana and got a job at Holloway House where he met and married Ruth. They started a family and shortly moved to Southwestern Michigan where they raised 4 children and he worked in the steel manufacturing industry; finally landing a job at Clark Equipment working as a welder for almost 25 yrs.  After retirement, he worked for Postellis Pre Fab and then 10 years at Speedway.

Hewie loved Country and Gospel music and when he was younger, he played guitar and sang with his relatives.  He loved to read the newspaper, follow politics and was an avid history fan, reading a variety of non-fiction books including the Bible. He was a NASCAR fan and also enjoyed drinking coffee with his buddies at the local McDonalds. The most important thing in his life was God, family and friends. He especially cherished his grandchildren & great grandchildren.  He was a humble, pleasant and polite man who rarely met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife Ruth of over 65 years and children: TJ Coburn of Fla.; David H. Coburn and Timothy Coburn, both of Minn., and Nena L. (Mitchell) Reese of Mich.;10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.  Also surviving are his sisters Barbara W. Bryan and Lucille Glasscock, both of La. and numerous nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents, Hewie was preceded in death by his infant daughter Christine.
