Joseph C. Berchin, Jr., 73 of Coloma passed away Friday, Sept 4, 2015 at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph. Services celebrating his life will be 1 pm Friday, Sept 11 at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma where visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 pm. Burial will be in Coloma Cemetery. Joe was born November 24, 1941 in Coloma to Joseph and Grace (Armstrong Mann) Berchin, Sr. He graduated in 1961 from Coloma High School and began working in the Watervliet Paper Mill where he was employed until 1967. Following that he became a linesman for I & M Electric Company until 1992. Joe was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was always ready to go camping and enjoyed fish frys, cookouts, campfires, reading, watching NASCAR, and driving the dune buggies he engineered. He charished his fishing trips to Rice Lake in Canada and visits to Tahquamenon Falls with his I & M buddies. He was also an extremely talented construction and woodworker, having built and remodeled several homes, garages, and barns. Joe is survived by his wife Charlotte Evett-Berchin; two daughters Dena Jo Berchin of Knoxville, Tenn and Heather (Manuel) Mota of Gilbert, Ariz. Also surviving is a grandson Alex Mota, two nieces and three nephews. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a sister Evelyn (Howard) Scherer, a brother Clyde (Ruth) Mann, and a niece Patricia Scherer.
