Thomas H. Flener, 65, of Riverside, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville.
Tom was born January 4, 1951 in Milan, Tennessee. He was one of five children born to Hugh and Marjorie Flener. Following graduation from Benton Harbor High School, Tom served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years during the Vietnam War. He married Jean Barton on March 1, 1980 in St. Joseph. Jean unexpectedly preceded Tom in death on July 31, 2014. Tom worked in management all of his life; retiring from Rite-Aid in 2008 after 28 years. He was a member of the Coloma American Legion Post 362. Tom was a family man and enjoyed gatherings with family and friends. He liked to play bean bags and the lottery. His most special moments were spending time with his sweet Alyssa and his little fella Carter.
Tom is survived by two daughters, Tara (Doug) Mundt of Coloma and Kara (George Jr.) Metz of Benton Harbor; three sisters, Terry (Jimmy) Crowder, Selena (Raymond) Edwards and Marie Myers, all of Ripley, Tennessee; his mother Marjorie Baker, also of Ripley; two sister in laws Janet Miller of Watervliet and Johanna Barton (Tim Kerschbaum) of Hartford; a brother in law Will Koch of Berrien Springs and his four grandchildren Alyssa, Carter and Brooke and Tyler Mundt.
Tom was also preceded in death by his father Hugh in 1959; his step-father Victor Baker in 1971 and his sister Joanne Koch in 2014.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma. Visitation will take place Monday from 5-8 p.m. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Coloma Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Coloma American Legion or the Riverside Hagar #6 School.
